The Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise at Katherine is one of several off-train-experiences that guests can opt for while traveling aboard The Ghan, whether North-Bound or South-Bound. In hotter weather, only one gorge is available for the cruise due to the heat, but in cooler months, both gorges are covered on the cruise.
Landon was out cruise tour-guide and his commentary was par-excellence. There is just so much history everywhere and Nitmiluk Gorge is no different. Native Australians have always lived in collaboration with the land. They’ve always used everything that Mother Nature has to offer. Rocks to make paints for rock art, plants and trees for baskets and food and paint and medicine. I can do absolutely no justice to the history shared by Landon. I was 100% engaged in his commentary as the boat slowly moved through the gorge and back. He even pointed out rock art that was visible from the boat – which was an unexpected gift – to be able to see something that was painted thousands of years ago by the original natives of this land – remarkable.
There’s a number of excellent off-train-experiences that guests can enjoy when traveling aboard The Ghan, all except the helicopter flights are included in the price of their tickets. Please pre-book as much in advance as possible!
